During the Inca Empire, Ollantaytambo was the regal estate of Emperor Pachacuti who conquered the region, built the town in addition to a ceremonial center. Ollantaytambo is named after Inka Pachacutec's General Ollanta (not his namesake modern-day president, Ollanta Humala). Ollanta cruel inwards dearest alongside the Inka's daughter, Cusi Coyllor, precisely the Inca refused her hand; it was impossible for a fellow member of the monarchy to get hitched alongside a commoner, fifty-fifty i who was a armed services leader. Thus scorned, Ollanta rebelled against his sovereign in addition to defeated his troops alongside an regular army led past times his lieutenant, Rumiñahui. The Inca died inwards the fighting in addition to was succeeded past times his son, Yupanqui.

In an intelligent motion the Incas flooded the plains below their stronghold making it hard for the horses to manoeuvre. Hernando, uncharacteristically, ordered a hasty retreat.
